Exhibition Overview

Upon a ground of lichen, a city is born. Beyond processes of modernization, human settlements, and layers of history and culture, a city also carries accumulated memories, overlaid again and again. This exhibition presents works by five Taiwanese and Japanese artists, including paintings and sculptures, under the theme “The City of Small Things.” Moving between reality and the past, urban landscapes and natural scenery, the works feel at once like fiction and poetry—both real and subtly magical—recording stories that are excavated and pieced together, generating new perspectives and emotional layers within familiar scenes.

Through painting and sculpture, the artists reimagine a city-state or a forested terrain, rebuilding their own territories of thought. Within the shifting between the real and the unreal, what role does “imagination” play? How does the “city” reappear through painting? These questions form an ongoing dialogue of artistic language across past, present, and future, constructing an “imaginary history”—a place of infinite depth.
